Three large, pristine lakes and towering mountain ranges dot the landscape from Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, to West Glacier, Montana. While this drive is less than 300 miles, you may want to devote multiple days to exploring this magical landscape. Early May to mid-September is an ideal time to go.
Begin your road trip with a full day in Coeur d’Alene, a lakeside city in northwest Idaho. Lake Coeur d’Alene is breathtaking, with 135 miles of shoreline, opportunities to hike in the neighboring woods and float or parasail on the lake. Consider staying overnight and enjoy an evening stroll through the vibrant downtown.
The next day, head north on U.S. Route 95 to the Pend Oreille Scenic Byway (Highway 200) into Montana. This two-lane highway skirts along the scenic coast of Lake Pend Oreille, offering spectacular views of the Cabinet Mountains. End your day in the quaint small town of Thompson Falls.
Breakfast at Minnie’s Montana Café is a must before continuing on Route 200 toward Flathead Lake. Cruise along Highway 93 north for views of the largest freshwater lake in the Western U.S. After an afternoon of swimming or paddle-boarding, dine on the upper-level overlook at Tamarack Brewing Company in Lakeside for a view of Flathead Lake.
Drive one hour north of Lakeside to reach your final destination. West Glacier is the entrance to Glacier National Park, full of jagged peaks, wildflower meadows and 700-plus miles of trails. Advance planning may be necessary to gain car access to the park.
